Goole Intermodal Terminal

Britannia Road
Goole
East Yorkshire
DN14

300,000 square feet

A scheme in its concept stage to merge various transport mediums to create a freight terminal for sea going and inland waterway vessels, road transport and rail.

The increased cost of moving freight by road and the need to reduce carbon emissions has made alternative modes of transport increasingly attractive. One litre of fuel can move 127 tonnes 1km by water, 97 tonnes the same distance by rail but only 50 tonnes by road (Source: European Transport Policy 2010)The need is therefore self-evident.

Goole is the UK's largest inland port and is ideally located for assembly and distribution throughout the UK.

The site sits alongside the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal, just off Andersen Road which links the port to the M62 and has existing rail sidings which connect to the national network.

The component parts of the project are:
  • A new wharf will be constructed to accomodate sea-going vessels of 2,000 tons
  • Use of the Aire and Calder canal for shipment of containers and product to Leeds
  • Reconstruction of the rail sidings to provide a modern freight transit facility
  • Construction of buildings for storage, order fulfilment or postponed manufacturing together with external storage
